So funny, this is the opposite trajectory of my jits development so far. I am a lone wolf at Relson Gracie Austin because until recently, I almost refused to play guard. Hated being on the bottom. Fought for top alllll the time. Great-- until I realized at the Pan that virtually every match is all about the guard. Now as a 3 stripe blue I'm playing a baby-whitebelt guard! Ack :)

You're doing exactly the right thing, and for the right reason. You've fought hard, you've trained hard, and your body and mind need a break. Have a beer for me. :)

Ryan... you fought hard and well. I’m super proud to be your training partner and team member. You’ll soon find your groove and will be become a beast. It just takes patience and lots of practice. I can’t wait to see you develop your game. Have fun this week on your vacation and get lots of rest. When you come back we’ll start filling in those holes. OSSsss!

Judo gi manufacturer Fushida has just ventured into the BJJ world. They offer a cut they refer to as their X-cut whihc is tailored towards the leaner builds. Give them a try.
http://www.fushida.ca
...or direct to their BJJ gi's
http://www.fushida.ca/jiu-jitsu-gis-uniforms.php
Have heard some rave reviews on them.

I agree with you, they should at least make it available on Strikeforce website for $24.99 like they did for some of the other events. Otherwise people who can't get Showtime who are not in the US are stuck. They will never get good exposure to the audiences outside of the US like this.

I head about this Mat toe as well and possibly I have it. Experienced a lot of pain and problems with my big toe but it went away more recently after I have taken a period of rest due to other injuries.

I think one way to prevent foot injuries including toes and mat burns is to wear wrestling shoes. I don't know if some academies don't like this but this is certainly a way to prevent these.

Grappling socks is an alternative but I think they won't prevent toe injuries in a big way.

Heard some great things from the latest Fushida gi's.
Don't own one myself, but am seriously considering one due to their extended cuts ....one that is targeting the leaner body types.
Might want to check them out.

I haven't worn a cup in years. Stopped just after learning that it's against the IBJJF rules. I haven't had any problems and have found that I'm much more likely to take an errant knee to the nose than a shot to the balls. It'sjust never been an issue.
