As stated previously I am on a quest to find a well-fitting gi or kimono. Not too long ago I purchased the latest Koral Competition MKM. I’ve measured it, been wearing it, and plan on reviewing it.
As great as the Koral is turning out to be, I’ve also been searching for another gi to add to my rotation. Because the great price of their Jiu Jitsu Cut Single Weave, I decided to give Piranha Gear a shot.
This blog post is not about the quality or a review of the gi I purchased from them; it’s a review of their customer service. In short: it’s excellent.
I felt a timeline of my interaction with the company gives a good indication of how they value their customers:
- I email them questions about their already specific gi measurements. They respond and help me out.
- Some time later I finally decide to order from a gi.
- Gi arrives just two days (!) later.
- Gi comes with a helpful pamphlet of care instructions and advice and a hand-written thank-you note.
- Product turns out to feel too big. I email them, they offer some advice and input. They mention that even if I wash wash it, they’ll still take it back (!!).
- I end up exchanging it. I send it to them, and they ship it to me for free. It takes only two days. Again they include a hand-written note – this time time expressing their hope that this size fits better.
I felt I could have asked anything reasonable and they would have been responsive and worked with me. It’s even implied in their policy that they return and exchange rash guards – which, to my knowledge, makes Piranha Gear the only company that does this.
Here is my impression of the ~$40 gi I purchased from Piranha Gear: it does not feel like a “cheap” gi. Don’t let the price fool you. I’ve only washed it, but I already like it better than many other well-known brands I’ve worn and purchased which sell for more than twice the price.
Because of this, it’s very likely Pirhana Gear will be on my “short list” when the time comes for me to get a new gi to complete my rotation. I will likely try one of their other, more expensive Jiu Jitsu (“grappling”) gis or kimonos. Some of their gis even brag about long arms – which may be perfect for a skinny, lanky person like me.
